Fetal alcohol syndrome is a health problem which affects to the patient and their family members infected by it. The problem is completely preventable if proper treatment is done. Causing a child to suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome is really nothing short of child abuse and it lasts for life. If a woman have a problem of FAS during her pregnancy then after her delivery the baby have to face some problems like less weight and be shorter than normal. Mainly the problem of FAS falls, when a pregnant woman drinks alcohol during her pregnancy. Due to which the baby she will born may cause by FAS which is a physically and mentally disabling condition.


There are three forms of FAS that are abnormal facial features, growth deficiencies, and central nervous system (CNS) problems. The patient of FAS may have problems with speech, learning, problem solving, memory, attention span, and/or hearing. The FAS problem affects on every moment of individuals life and also may affect their family lives. If the women does not use alcohol during her pregnancy, FAS is 100 percent preventable.

The baby born with FAS faces the several problems. Those are:

  • Smaller heads
  • Sleep and sucking disturbances in infancy
  • Deformed facial features
  • Problems with daily living
  • Abnormal joints and limbs
  • Poor reasoning and judgment skills
  • Poor coordination
  • Problems with learning
  • Short memories

The main problem among children with FAS is psychiatric problems, criminal behavior, unemployment, and incomplete education. Some of the teenagers don't have a problem of FAS after their born but they may acquire the problem after some time due to related disorder. These conditions can be very serious, but there are protective factors that have been found to help individuals with FAS. The children with FAS need special education for their developmental and educational potential.

Teenagers with FAS need a loving, nurturing, and stable home life to avoid disruptions, transient lifestyles, or harmful relationships. The teenagers with FAS that are not giving stable home and loving nature may involve in youth violence. They don't need any experience to have such negative experiences to develop secondary conditions.

Treatment:

The problem of FAS is completely preventable. For that condition, the pregnant woman should not need to use alcohol during her pregnancy. It is not late when the woman stops drinking, if she is using it. As soon she stops drinking, it will be better for both her baby and herself. If a woman is not able to stop drinking, she should contact her doctor, local Alcoholics Anonymous, or local alcohol treatment center. The doctor helps them in leaving their habit of drinking. If a woman is sexually active and is not using an effective form of birth control, she should not drink alcohol. The doctor try to identify women at high risk through primary health care and other systems traditionally used by high-risk individuals before and during pregnancy.
